Over the past few years, Utah’s legislature has consistently worked to lower the state income tax rate whenever possible— and some have even proposed eliminating it entirely. These efforts have resulted in steady reductions, with the income tax rate dropping from 4.85% to 4.65% in 2023, and then to 4.55% after last session’s tax cut bill.

This year, another reduction is in the works. SB 116, sponsored by Senator Daniel McCay, proposes lowering the income tax rate from 4.65% to 4.55%, continuing the trend of easing the tax burden on Utahns.

While an even larger cut would be preferable, any reduction in Utah’s income tax is a step in the right direction. Income taxes are among the most harmful taxes because they directly penalize work, investment, and productivity. Lowering or eliminating the income tax would make Utah an even more attractive place to live, work, and do business—boosting economic growth and ensuring that more money stays in the hands of those who earn it.
