As license plate reader technology becomes more common, there is a need for clarity and consistency to how it is used by law enforcement and government agencies.
House Bill 327 from Rep. Kristen Chevrier provides needed safeguards.
By consolidating outdated and scattered statutes into a clear, modern framework, it ensures these tools are deployed for legitimate, authorized purposes, like finding stolen vehicles and supporting criminal investigations, while maintaining public trust through defined standards and accountability.
Just as importantly, HB 327 puts strong guardrails around how sensitive data is handled. It sets clear expectations for data security, limits how long information can be retained, and establishes transparent reporting requirements so Utahns can see how this technology is being used.
