Staff review of this legislation finds that it aligns with our principles and should therefore be passed into law.

The government should not create unnecessary barriers for parents choosing the best education for their children. Requiring legal documents like a signed affidavit adds needless red tape to the decision to homeschool.

Representative Nicoleen Peck’s House Bill 209 streamlines this process.

Under HB 209, parents can notify their public school of their homeschooling decision with a simple email or letter—eliminating bureaucratic hurdles while upholding Utah law, which affirms that parents have the “primary responsibility for the education of their children.”

This bill removes an unnecessary obstacle, making it easier for families to begin homeschooling.
