This bill passed the House and Senate.

Staff review of this legislation finds that it is aligned with our principles and merits support.

Government mandates often unreasonably drive up the cost of health care, as regulations place direct burdens on health care providers or function to reduce their number operating in the marketplace. These regulations violate the principles of a free market that is otherwise (in theory) guaranteed by the Utah Constitution.

Under current Utah law, advanced practice registered nurses (APRN), or “nurse practitioners,” are not allowed to prescribe schedule II drugs. House Bill 336, which has been introduced by Representative Jim Dunnigan, amends out that restriction, further opening up the health care industry to greater access and lower cost.

This bill will give patients more choice when it comes to selecting a health care provider and will remove unnecessary state government regulations on nurse practitioners.
