This bill did not leave the House, and failed to receive a vote in the Senate.
They are coming faster than you think—autonomous vehicles are no longer relegated to the imagination, but instead dozens of companies are making huge strides in taking the technology mainstream. And now Utah wants a real piece of the action.
Representative Robert Spendlove is running House Bill 371 which will authorize the use of autonomous vehicles on Utah roads. This builds upon a Utah study that was completed in October of 2016. The study outlines best practices for driverless cars and many of those ideas have been written into HB 371.
At a time when state officials are making significant decisions regarding transportation that will impact Utahns for generations, autonomous vehicles must be a critical part of the discussion. Driverless cars will lead to more efficient use of vehicles, less cars per capita, and will save thousands of lives. HB 371 will help attract autonomous vehicle companies to the state and will add to the innovative, forward thinking culture embodied by Silicon Slopes.
