Police officers should be focused on public safety, not meeting quotas. Evaluating officers based on ticketing or arrest numbers sets a dangerous precedent—one that can lead to over-policing and enforcement driven by statistics rather than justice. Fortunately, Utah law already prohibits police quotas, but there’s room for improvement.
Senate Bill 243, sponsored by Senator Todd Weiler, strengthens this prohibition by making it even clearer that quotas cannot be used for officer compensation, promotion, reward, or discipline. This ensures that officers are judged on their performance and judgment, not arbitrary numbers.
Why this matters:
- Prevents Over-Policing – Officers should serve the community, not be pressured into unnecessary stops and citations.
- Stops Policing for Profit – Quotas create an incentive to generate revenue rather than focus on real threats to public safety.
