Senate Bill 250, sponsored by Senator Dan McCay prohibits a governmental entity from implementing technologies to create a public network of surveillance footage. The legislation also bars governmental entities from contracting with private parties to gather surveillance footage.
A public surveillance network is any real-time monitoring from government-owned or leased cameras. This bill does not prevent networked cameras from operating on public property where government buildings are located.
Libertas supports this bill. To prevent Utah cities from implementing full-scale surveillance, there must be reasonable limitations placed on the government’s ability to continuously surveil the public.
