Op-Eds

If the warning signs are true, and social media is creating all the harm talked about in the news, we can’t simply ban the problems away.
Given the federal government’s abysmal track record when it comes to scheduling drugs in a timely manner that comports with current science, states shouldn’t wait. It’s time they step up and do the right thing for individuals suffering from mental illness.
Certainly, police agencies should watch themselves and each other. But ultimately if the people themselves cannot access the information needed to watch these watchers, there cannot be true police accountability.
Bill to place rules on how police can seek digital warrants is something other states should copy.
Standardized education does not benefit students, because students are far from standardized.
Instead of limiting access to social media, we need to focus on education and empowerment, providing minors and their parents with the skills and judgment they need to navigate the online world and interact with their peers in and outside of Utah.
