The State Auditor's office has released its statement on the appointments for Utah's newly-created Personal Privacy Oversight Commission.
The airport, when it was redesigned, had an opportunity to construct a facility that would represent the future economy and, instead, elected to go with infrastructure that represented the airports of years past rather than embracing a more forward-looking model that reflects a changing economy.
This was only possible because the Utah Supreme Court approved and created the country's first legal services sandbox. The goal of the sandbox program is to get companies like Law on Call to find new and innovative ways to deliver legal services to low-income Utahns who do not have the means to afford a lawyer.
Banjo was merely a side-effect of a much larger problem.
Where many states have created legal complications for companies wanting to serve their customers, Utah is providing them the option to hit the 'pause' button on any law or regulation that stands in their way.
While some might argue that the courts should later decide the appropriate balance between law enforcement's interest and personal privacy, courts have been inconsistent in their rulings, and it could take years to get a solution — if the technology is even discovered and challenged. It's up to the states to actively protect individuals' civil liberties.
