Libertas Institute supports this bill
Senate Bill 322, sponsored by Senator John Johnson, creates a regulatory pathway for public schools to pilot artificial intelligence tools in the classroom. The bill establishes a time-limited education AI sandbox that allows schools to experiment with AI while requiring educator oversight, parental notice and opt-out rights, student data privacy protections, safety testing, and independent evaluation before any statewide adoption. It also requires human review of student-impacting decisions and sets guardrails around academic integrity and student safety.
Libertas supports SB 322 because it allows schools and teachers to responsibly experiment with AI tools rather than restricting innovation outright. Artificial intelligence has the potential to personalize learning, improve instruction, and reduce administrative burdens on educators. This sandbox model ensures experimentation happens with transparency, parental consent, and strong protections for student privacy and safety. It strikes the right balance between innovation and accountability.
While this bill establishes a thoughtful framework for AI pilots, the legislature should continue reducing unnecessary barriers to educational innovation. Schools should have flexibility to adopt emerging tools that improve student outcomes, provided core safeguards remain in place. Utah can lead the nation in responsible AI integration by continuing to pair innovation with targeted, limited protections rather than blanket restrictions.
