It is quite common to hear objections from government officials in Utah to the overreach and interventions of the federal government—and rightly so. Far too often, however, these same officials sponsor or support policies within our own state that are based on the same interventionist ideas, regulating various aspects of human behavior and infringing upon the individual liberty of each Utahn. This inconsistency must be recognized and rejected; the proper role of government applies just as much to state and local governments as it does to the national government.
