So RFK Jr. just turned the food pyramid upside down, and suddenly the federal government is telling Americans to prioritize protein, healthy fats, and vegetables over a bread-heavy base. “Eat real food” is now official HHS guidance.
Here’s Our Take
Telling Americans what to eat is one thing. (One thing we don’t believe the government should be doing in the first place…) But, letting Americans choose, purchase, and sell food freely is another regulatory matter entirely.
While Washington debates whether butter is back, Libertas has been arguing for something more fundamental. If real food is the goal, why do local farmers and food truck owners have to wade through a sea of permits, inspections, and arbitrary rules just to sell it? Why should property owners be restricted from growing fresh vegetables in their own front yard? Consumers are smart enough to ask questions, assess risk, and make their own choices, no nanny state required.

So yes, celebrate the pyramid flip if you’d like. But if the feds are serious about real food, maybe the next step is letting Americans freely buy it from each other, whether from a neighbor’s produce stand or a taco truck on the corner.
