Chances are, you’ve had to apply for a permit from a government entity. The problem is that the process of getting a permit can be confusing, and it can vary greatly depending on what kind of permit it is and to whom you are submitting your application.

Regardless of what the permit is for, there are some basic standards that you should be able to count on when it comes to your application.

SB 204, introduced by Senator Kirk Cullimore, sets guidelines to be met by government agencies that issue permits.

First, the criteria for whether a permit is granted or denied should be clear and documented. That way, you’ll know when applying for a permit what you need to do in order to have it granted.

Second, there should be a specific timeline for when the permit will or will not be granted. Without a timeline governing the process, there’s no telling when you’ll hear back about your application.

Lastly, the permitting process should be subject to a second opinion. If you feel your permit was wrongfully denied, there should be an appeal process in place.

Should this bill pass, Utah residents will be able to rely on these standards when applying for a permit.
