For nearly a decade, Utah has run a program that allows high school students in all settings (public, private, and homeschool) to take online courses of their choice for credit. This expands course choice beyond the physical location of a high school, opening up opportunities for advanced coursework and credit recovery.
The program has steadily grown since its inception, and its success warrants further expansion. Senator Kirk Cullimore has introduced Senate Bill 234 which would expand the Statewide Online Education Program (SOEP) beyond just high school to 7th and 8th graders.
SOEP has opened the door for students to take classes with high-quality instruction for subjects and coursework that may not be offered in their school. 7th and 8th graders will be able to learn at their own pace and advance beyond the level of coursework offered at their respective schools.
By opening up SOEP to 7th and 8th graders, Utah will open the door to greater future opportunities for students with the drive to achieve and prepare for future education and career opportunities.
