What does it mean to educate our children?
As parents, we want our children to receive the best education possible. We may envision them sitting in traditional classrooms, absorbing knowledge from textbooks and lectures. But what if education is more than that? What if their education focused on their potential and passions? What if education brought them joy?
Paradigm Shift
As a school principal and teacher, I once thought traditional education was the pinnacle of learning. However, my perspective shifted dramatically when we brought our children home during the school closures in 2020. I learned about the world of education beyond the traditional, and it opened my eyes to the possibility that education doesn’t have to be in a classroom.
My paradigm shift led my wife and I to “unbundle” our children’s education. One of my daughters has a passion for writing. In August she will take two classes from a local microschool, is enrolled in the Wasatch Independent Debate League, and we developed a personalized homeschool curriculum to enhance her writing skills. Her passion and excitement for writing has never been higher.
Education is more than a classroom
Education, I have come to realize, extends far beyond the confines of traditional classrooms. It is in our day-to-day living, constantly shaping and molding our understanding of the world. It reveals itself in conversations at the dinner table, in exploring the wonders of nature, and in embracing new experiences as a family. Education becomes a tapestry woven into the fabric of our lives, creating moments that bind us together and deepen our connection.
Education is not just about imparting knowledge; it is about nurturing the soul, finding truth and beauty, and creating a moral compass to guide our children through life. The power of education shapes not only our intellect but also our character.
Rethink Education
To parents who may be hesitant to explore other educational paths, I urge you to reconsider. Dare to step outside the comfort zone of convention and seek educational models that align with your child’s passions and strengths.
It will require time, courage, and an open mind, but the rewards outweigh the challenges. If you take this journey, you will witness the sparkle in your children’s eyes as they discover their passions, their confidence blossom as they pursue their dreams, and the harmony that emerges within your family.
So, fellow parents, let us embark on this journey of reimagining education. Let us choose an approach that kindles the flames of curiosity, nurtures our children’s passions, and helps them discover their own unique paths to joy, meaning, and fulfillment. The possibilities are endless, and the rewards are beyond measure.
You won’t regret it.
